Wendys Cottage all about

Wendy's cottage is named after a lone female whale that used to visit the town in the late 1930's. According to SJ du Toit's book, ‘Hermanus Stories' , this whale, who was fondly known as Wendy, was considered one of the family by the village folk, as she used to return year after year. She stopped coming to the bay in the early 1940's but the house that was situated on the rocks, near that lonesome spot, was named Wendy's cottage in her honour. The tradition was carried on to the 1950s when another female whale was named Wendy. The press regularly reported on the movements of Wendy and her calf.

Walker Bay in Hermanus is where the whales come to calf. They make the journey from Antarctica to the warmer waters of the Southern Cape Coast every year from June to November. They play and frolic in the bay, much to the delight of those who come to catch a glimpse of these giants of the sea. The sound of the whale crier's kelp horn informs visitors as to the whereabouts of the whales.

Apache Wedding Blessing

Now you will feel no storms,
for each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
for each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there is no loneliness,
for each of you is companion to the other,
You are two people,
but there is one life before you, and one home.
Turn together to look at the road you traveled,
to reach this, the hour of your happiness.
It stretches behind you into the past.
Look to the future that lies ahead.
A long and winding, adventure-filled road,
whose every turn means discovery,
new hopes, new joys, new laughter, and a few shared tears.
May happiness be your companion,
May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead;
And through all the years to come.
Go this day to your dwelling place and enter into your days together.
May your days be good and long upon the earth.
Your adventure has just begun!

Ring Blessing

Ring Blessing Ceremoney is performed before the wedding vows and exchange of rings, the wedding officiant will ask everyone to participate in a ring blessing. The ring blessing is an opportunity to send the bride and groom good luck and love through a silent wish.
The blessing begins during a period of music and reflection, each guest holds the rings and silently offers a prayer or wish for the couple.
In essence, the rings are warmed by the hands and hearts of the guests.

Whale Legend

Whale...

Of mighty oceans,
    You have seen it all.
      Secrets of the ages are
         Heard within your call.

Teach me how to hear your words,
   And how to understand,
      The very roots of history,
         Of when our world began.

Whale figures in the folklore of all cultures and is a creature of antiquity. In Amerindian legends the whale is associated with the time before the sea swallowed up whole continents in a great world-wide catastrophe. It is therefore regarded as the carrier of ancient knowledge and the record keeper...
